Local young lad with a strong passion for engineering, Otis Nethercot, who has currently completed his first year apprenticeship at college studying towards his NVQ level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations qualification. Otis has now joined Greenfield  so he will be well on his way to completing a BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Engineering on an industry leading training programme and realising his ambition of becoming a skilled engineer.

Otis aims to replicate the achievements of previous award winning Greenfield apprentices by completing his apprenticeship and becoming a sheet metal engineer. Otis now joins nine other apprentices already studying on the training programme. The company serves many markets including refrigeration, agriculture, commercial lighting, electronics, office furniture and the construction sector.

Intensive on-going internal training as well as day release at college has been the ethos at Greenfield since the beginning and it has always valued reliable, hard-working staff. It’s a multi-generational workplace and Otis is among a number of next generation younger employees coming up through the business, which helps create a highly skilled framework of loyal staff.

The emphasis is very much on career development through training and many apprentices recruited by Greenfield, also spend day release at either Exeter or Petroc College, eventually finishing to become highly skilled engineers who are ‘a vital element to the introduction of new state of the art equipment continually being introduced’. Staff are also constantly up-skilled in-house through the teaching of new techniques and technologies.

Otis was made aware of the apprenticeship scheme through friends and ex-work colleagues who had joined Greenfield explaining the exciting opportunities available and the diverse working environment.

Simon Walker Operations Director said; “The apprenticeship can go on for four years if top grades are achieved, Depending on your academic ability there are two options Level 2 City & Guilds plus a work based NVQ assessment, or a Level 3 BTEC again with NVQ assessments with the ability to carry on to a HNC.”
