Starting out in the factory as an apprentice 26 years ago I never thought at the time were my engineering career would take me. The first 5 years learning how the sheetmetal equipment operated and how to use it correctly. This gained important product knowledge of the many customers we dealt with at the time. Academically at college I was doing extremely well on my ONC/HNC this set me up to be promoted and move into a new role in the drawing office. This was initially to create production drawings for the shop floor as at the time many clients didn’t supply engineering information. I then moved more over to using my engineering and sheetmetal skills to start designing components and complete assemblies. The early years have definitely paid dividends learning onsite and at college to gave me the required skills to take the design role to the next level for customers. I’ve worked on some pretty prestigious and interesting projects over the years. But I still get a buzz when a new opportunity comes into the drawing office team that we have a chance of doing a really interesting and different job for the customer. That’s what I really get a kick out of and enjoy immensely.
