The Team

We know what really makes the difference to enable us to deliver exceptional service. Our staff we are immensely proud of in our organisation.

Managing Director

Gary Burnard

Since I started at Greenfield as an apprentice all those years ago, 32 to be precise. I've seen the business evolve considerably over the years. I suppose I can say the same about myself as a more maturer individual nowadays. The role as Managing Director has involved as we've grown challenging at times to scale up the organisation putting in place everything that the Greenfield team need to run and continue to be a successful business. From development of our digital platforms to automating with the latest technologies more and more mainstream production. Importantly all the time the business strategy is constantly blossoming but changing we must ensure that our systems in place are robust. Whilst monitoring and measuring our progress has been key. It’s sometimes difficult to see progress being made when operating at the sharp end of a manufacturing business, but when I take time to look back and see how far Greenfield have come, then that’s when I get a real kick out of what's been achieved and what's ahead.

I’ve been involved in Greenfield Engineering for well over 15 years starting as a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice. My position at Greenfield is working closely with the daily operational running of both sites with the Production Managers & Company Directors and Manging Greenfield’s Supply chain in full.

My skills enable our business to deal with demands put on it from our very diverse customer base through full supply chain management, key account management, new product introduction & manufacturing process improvement, plus Business system implementation and maintenance.

Since the company embarked on its “Lean Journey” back in January 2010, I’ve strengthened my Lean skills understanding with manufacturing product & process improvements, using problem solving tools. This understanding of Lean has been in conjunction with direct training from the Herman Miller Production System. Having been exposed at an early age in my career to this way of thinking and approach to manufacturing, it has helped with my day to day operational decision making and continuous improvement for the business.

I started my career at Greenfield Engineering after University some 10 years ago. Learning the business and principles of sheet metal manufacturing, starting on the shop floor, and working my way up to becoming Production Manager of the powder coating and assembly teams.

These very important early stages have strengthened my understanding and knowledge of all manufacturing processes, which in turn helps me work closely with customers at the outset of projects. Some of which are complex, involving multiple materials and assemblies. This is the perfect catalyst to bring Greenfield closer to understanding new client’s requirements.

I feel that I am ready to introduce myself to new customers from a technical standpoint or alternatively just to be available to support the integration into production.

Simon Walker
Operations Director

Simon Walker

I joined Greenfield Engineering just over 12 years ago. The first 7.5 years was as the company’s Production Manager and more recently as the Operations Director, working closely with our Production Managers and Production Support Team on all internal issues such as: manufacturing, quality, health & safety, HR, maintenance and training requirements.

Previously, I worked for Princess Yachts in Plymouth for 25 years. The last 15 of which were spent in various leadership roles.

I am someone who leads by example. A natural communicator who is committed to developing cohesive teams by choosing the right people for each job and mentoring individuals to achieve their full potential in the workplace.

Nick Westlake
Business Manager

Nick Westlake

I’ve just passed the 20 year milestone at Greenfield Engineering. Came here straight from School, and spent the first few years as an apprentice. I was shop floor based for 2 years, with time spent learning to operate and set all the machines we had at the time. Then I started to periodically spend some time between shop floor and the CAD office. Eventually moving in there full time once up to speed.

After a further 2 years I started to move into more of a planning role, which led to being production manager from Circa 2007 – 2009. Working in sales followed, as my production management role saw me develop good relationships with our clients. This subsequently led me into the current role of Business Manager.

The foundations laid during the early part of that journey has made everything since feel a very natural progression. The skills and general sheet metal knowledge gained through those 4-5 years of being on the shop floor and CAD office, were key to all that’s followed.

Adam Watkins
Production Design Engineer Lead

Adam Watkins

Starting out in the factory as an apprentice 26 years ago I never thought at the time were my engineering career would take me. The first 5 years learning how the sheetmetal equipment operated and how to use it correctly. This gained important product knowledge of the many customers we dealt with at the time. Academically at college I was doing extremely well on my ONC/HNC this set me up to be promoted and move into a new role in the drawing office. This was initially to create production drawings for the shop floor as at the time many clients didn’t supply engineering information. I then moved more over to using my engineering and sheetmetal skills to start designing components and complete assemblies. The early years have definitely paid dividends learning onsite and at college to gave me the required skills to take the design role to the next level for customers. I’ve worked on some pretty prestigious and interesting projects over the years. But I still get a buzz when a new opportunity comes into the drawing office team that we have a chance of doing a really interesting and different job for the customer. That’s what I really get a kick out of and enjoy immensely.

I’ve worked within the sheetmetal industry for 20 years now moving from the shop floor to the drawing office. I’ve been developing a multitude of items for different customers over the years and love the different challenges each customer brings to the table. After completing with distinction my ONC/HNC at college. It was a natural progression to move into the design team which I showed a natural aptitude for coming up with initial ideas then having the ability to transpose them into a finished product.

After joining the GF team straight out of school I intended to spend a year working out what career I really wanted. Little did i realise that some 15 years on, i’d still be here! After moving into leadership roles while still a teenager I found I had a natural ability in this area.

Never being one to shy from a challenge both physically and mentally, working my way through all facets of the business and spending many years in CNC programming and operation, all the while accumulating vast engineering knowledge.

It’s been enjoyable and rewarding along the way thanks to the fantastic employees of both past and present With my current role allowing myself more time creating enhancement to the employees and using the accumulated knowledge to increase productivity.

With reflection on my experience, learning of proven, successful practices elsewhere and an ability to generate bespoke solutions for the business. My aim, is to continuously improve upon the business efficiency, practices, reliability and employee engagement to create an environment focused on the satisfaction of our varied customer needs while maintaining a successful and stimulating workplace for all involved.

I've been with Greenfield for 18 years. During this time, I've amassed a lot of on-the-job skills in Sheetmetal bringing considerable manufacturing experience in reviewing, updating, and maintaining quality procedures. Being given additional responsibilities for HR and H&S systems within the management team. Alongside my organisational skills and articulate approach to systems and the documentation. I am also responsible for day-to-day planning, training and implementation of the quality management system as defined in our quality manual. I also write and update quality plan's procedures for individual projects that require bespoke additional processes. I've now been focusing on our carbon footprint working on our sustainability and environmental policies for over thirteen months measuring our environmental impact across our end to end processes.
Billy Hinson
Purchasing & Material Planning Technician

Billy Hinson

As a former Greenfield apprentice I’ve been with the business for 10 years. During this time I’ve worked in a multitude of area sections in the business which has enabled me to gain a valuable sheetmetal knowledge and understanding of all the main processes that are critical to the role I’m currently in.

This important role involves assisting production on the daily basis. Including creating production documentation such as work schedules. Allowing the production teams to have the operational vision required to carry out the production plan and complete the jobs efficiently. The role also involves problem solving and rectifying unplanned production situations. Communicating with customers when required keeping everyone updated with their changes to delivery schedules.

I started in a typing pool at 16 at Johnson Matthey but within 12 months realised I didn’t want to be a secretary!

I moved into the accounts department with the same company and started to study. Over the following years I achieved a BTec in Business Studies and then AAT Level 4 in accountancy. I remained there for 32 years until they dissolved the company. I then worked in a Group Finance Analyst role for a telecommunications recycler using improvement techniques to advance and develop the financial systems.

After deciding to relocate to Devon in 2017, I joined Greenfield Engineering as a payroll and accounts clerk. During my time at the company, I have updated/improved various duties including creating a Personnel Planner online for the managers, which provides more up to date information.”

Matthew Martin
Maintenance Engineer

Matthew Martin

I started at Greenfield 16 years ago after completing an electrical apprenticeship. Joining Greenfield's production team where I learned how to set and operate the equipment and was soon running a team. As Greenfield being a manufacturing business, I always leaned towards the technical aspects of the internal workings of the machines. I was promoted to head of maintenance four years ago. A key area to the success of a business has been the ability to control the reliability of mainstream production. This is where the maintenance department hold an important vital role in ensuring that downtime is always kept to a minimum. I do this through a stringent regime of preventative maintenance programs on all the equipment. All of this is now digitally recorded fully documented measured and reviewed which has enabled Greenfield to operate at 96% uptime on the main production lines over the last twelve months that we have been monitoring. I've been heavily involved in implementing this over the last year and I'm extremely proud of this project. I consider myself as a silent guardian of the equipment and facilities taking immense satisfaction and pride in keeping the machines in top condition fully operational, guaranteeing efficient production is maintained, and reducing costly downtime and capacity disruption. We've had several in-depth successful audits from key customers and the maintenance has scored highly on all occasions. My aim is to have the best maintenance department we possibly can create.
Frank Green

Frank Green

I’ve always been very passionate about engineering since a young age. Going straight into sheetmetal from 16yrs old. Starting Greenfield with Michelle in 1989 was a challenge putting on a shirt and tie at 6 o’clock in the morning to head out for customer meetings. Then returning to the factory later after winning new business to put on my workwear to start to manufacture. With the rapid growth we soon realised that we needed to create our future team. So embarked on building a strong group of young individuals that would eventually have the same driving passion for sheetmetal as we did. Now fast forward 35 years and I look proudly at the team we have built from our apprenticeship programme. From the managing director to many of the senior management team. Both Daniel and Richard are both passionate about the business which makes me extremely proud. Most of the team have been with the business from leaving school and have incredible drive to succeed. As it comes full circle and I come to the end of my working career in sheetmetal manufacturing. I am fortunate to now be a small part of this fantastic dynamic team that has helped Greenfield into the business it is today.

I was a cofounder of Greenfield Engineering when we launched in 1989, I spent a lot of time working together with Frank getting the business off the ground and established.
Since those early days I've been an integral part of the engine room of the business controlling the financial aspects from behind the scenes to ensure the smoothest of operations. This has given Greenfield strong financial foundations and stability that has grown over the years. When we started Greenfield, my primary responsibility revolved around managing the accounting, as well as being hands on assisting in purchasing and working on customers quotations. As the business steadily expanded and grew over the years, I started to relinquish and handover some of those responsibilities and transitioned to exclusively working behind the scenes on budgeting, cash forecasting, strengthening the company's, systems, HR processes, and general number crunching.

When not at my computer working, I spend precious time with our grandchildren taking them to swimming lessons and occasionally collecting them from nursery, school or taking them to afterschool clubs.
